If you have started researching eyebrow embroidery, you have probably hit a wall of names: microblading, nano, misty, ombré, powder, combination. They sound like marketing. Most of the time, they describe just three real results. Here is the honest version, from someone who does this every day.
Microblading: the most natural
Microblading is built stroke by stroke. Using a fine, hand-held tool, I draw individual hairs that follow the direction your own brow grows. Up close and from across a room, they read as real hair, slightly fuller, perfectly shaped, but undeniably yours.
Microblading is the right answer when you want definition without anything that looks done. It suits people who still have some natural brow hair and normal-to-dry skin. The one caveat: on very oily skin, fine strokes fade fast, scab more heavily, and can blur. If that is your skin, I will tell you, and steer you somewhere that heals better.
Soft Powder Brow: our signature
Soft Powder Brow (you will also see it called powder or ombré) skips the individual hairs and builds a soft veil of colour instead. The finish is a gentle gradient: lighter at the front, a little deeper through the body and tail. It looks exactly like a brow softly filled with a good powder.
This is the technique I recommend most often, and it is the studio's signature. It flatters the widest range of faces and skin types, including oily skin, where it heals more reliably: less scabbing, better colour retention, and a shape that stays clean as it settles. You also control the intensity, barely-there for a natural day, or a touch stronger if you like a groomed makeup look.
Combination Brow: the most dimensional
Combination Brow does what the name says. Fine hairstrokes through the front and along the top give realism; a soft powder shade through the body and tail gives depth and fullness. The result is the most true-to-life of the three, full, dimensional, and natural at the same time.
If your brows are sparse or patchy and you want them to look genuinely full rather than just defined, this is usually the one. Because it blends two techniques, it takes more design time and a steadier hand, exactly why it should be done by one qualified artist from start to finish.
The client I talked out of microblading
A few weeks ago, a client came in asking for microblading. She had already had it done more than once at another studio, and every time the same thing happened: her brows faded too quickly. One look at her skin told me why. It was very, very oily.
So I talked her out of the very thing she came in asking for, and recommended Soft Powder Brow instead. On skin like hers, powder shading scabs less, holds its colour better, and heals more evenly than fine strokes ever will. She was not annoyed. She understood the moment it was explained, because it finally made sense of why her brows kept disappearing.
So which should you choose?
Here is the part the chains rarely say out loud: your skin type matters more than the name. The most beautiful technique in the world will not look good if it does not heal well on your skin.
- Normal to dry skin, want the most natural look? Microblading.
- Oily or combination skin, or want a polished finish? Soft Powder Brow.
- Sparse brows, want real fullness and dimension? Combination Brow.
Price should not be the deciding factor either. Combination Brow costs a little more than the other two, only because it blends two techniques and takes about an extra hour of work. Nothing here is a forever decision
One more thing I tell every undecided client: this is not a one-way door. Say you choose Soft Powder today and it fades faster than expected on your skin. Going back towards hairstrokes can still be considered at a later touch-up. The technique we pick is the best answer for your skin as it is today, not a contract for life.
